Can you skim over a textured ceiling?
In most cases, yes. If the texture is well bonded we seal it and skim over the top, leaving a flat ceiling ready for paint. If it is loose or very deep we may need to scrape back or overboard first, and we will tell you which at the quote stage, not halfway through.
How much would it cost to skim a whole three-bed house in Washington?
A full house re-skim depends on how many rooms, whether ceilings are included and how much preparation the surfaces need, so prices vary widely. As a guide it is usually a low four-figure job. We quote free of charge and in writing after walking round the house.
We stripped wallpaper and the walls are a mess. Can you save them?
Almost always. Torn paper faces, old adhesive and gouges are everyday problems. We prep and seal the background, fill the worst areas, then skim the whole wall so it finishes as one clean surface.
Are cracks in a 1970s ceiling anything to worry about?
Usually they are just movement along plasterboard joints, which is cosmetic and easily dealt with by taping and skimming. A sagging or springy ceiling is different and needs looking at quickly. We can tell you which you have when we visit.
Is it better to overboard an old ceiling or replace it?
Overboarding, fixing new plasterboard straight over the old ceiling, is faster, far less messy, and right for most tired ceilings. Full replacement only makes sense where the old ceiling is failing or access above is needed. We price both options where relevant so you can choose.
Do you cover all parts of Washington?
Yes. Washington is made up of its various villages and districts, and we cover every one of them. We are based in Houghton-Le-Spring, so nowhere in Washington is more than a short drive for us.
What is dot and dab, and do my walls have it?
Dot and dab means plasterboard stuck to the wall with dabs of adhesive rather than fixed to timber. It is common in homes of Washington's era and in modern builds. It skims perfectly well, and if a board has come loose we can refix or replace it before skimming.
How long before I can paint a freshly skimmed room?
Allow roughly a week for the plaster to dry fully, a little longer in cold or damp weather. When the surface is an even light pink, apply a watered-down mist coat first so the paint keys in properly.
Will you protect our carpets and furniture?
Yes. We sheet up floors and anything left in the room before mixing any plaster, and we tidy and sweep before we leave. Plastering is wet work, but your home should not show any evidence of that afterwards.
Do you charge for quotes in Washington?
